Entertainment During the Pandemic

2020 was an unusual and tough year for many of us, but one thing that did not disappoint was the entertainment.  There were a lot of good options for music, movies, shows, and games that came out this year, many of which managed to take away some of the boredom from quarantine.

Television shows have been releasing new episodes slower than usual this year, but they are still pushing out strong content.  The Mandalorian, a Star Wars spin-off series, recently had its season two finale, and it left many fans shocked and excited for what comes next.  Let’s just say some iconic characters have returned, so if you’re a Star Wars fan and have not seen this show before, this is certainly a show for you.

Barbarians is a new drama and action show that just came out this past October. It is about German warriors in 9 A.D. halting the spread of the Roman Empire with many unexpected twists and turns.

More shows to look forward to are This Is Us, The Undoing, The Third Day and Never Have I Ever.

I asked sophomore Lauren Hunter what her favorite show was, and her thoughts about the show.

“Mine is ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary’ because I liked the music a lot, Hunter said. “They took a lot of popular songs and then changed them up. It was also generally funny and a good show I could watch with my siblings.”

Even though many movie theaters were closed, many stunning films came out this year. Most were still accessible through streaming platforms, thankfully.

Popular films from 2020 included Tenet, Mulan, The Croods: A New Age, AVA, The Invisible Man, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and the Honest Thief.

Movies were harder to see this year, but a lot of the recent titles are a highly recommended watch.

A lot of great games have hit the previous and new consoles this year, for example Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty: Cold War, Mafia (Remake), Assassins Creed: Valhalla, Demon Souls, Resident Evil 3, Star Wars: Squadrons, NBA 2K21, and many more.

I asked junior Graham Foster about his favorite new video game and why he felt that way.

“A game I really enjoyed is Spider-Man Miles Morales, because the gameplay and story is superfluid, I have freedom during combat and boss fights,” Foster said. “Also, the story is flawless and I can feel connected to the characters.”

It has been a very exciting year for video games, and with the added bonus of new gaming consoles (X Box and the Playstation 5), playing these new games should be very entertaining far into 2021.

Despite all the lockdowns and restrictions we saw this year, 2020 still saw plenty of new music that became popular worldwide. Some examples include “The Box” by Roddy Ricch, “Say So” by Doja Cat, “Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd, “Godzilla” by Eminem (ft. Juice WRLD), “Highest in the Room” by Travis Scott (ft. Rosalía, and Lil Baby), “Please Me” by Cardi B and Bruno Mars, “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion and “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa.

From what I observed, this year’s music had a wide range of a revamped 70’s and 80’s style which can be seen in some music videos.  Without a doubt, 2020 had some very interesting music and new styles.
